It was partisan, it was an attempt to create a crisis where none existed, and frankly, it is the wrong message to send to the American people. In a country that has virtually half its citizens not registered and only half of them showing up to the polls, with the percentage of people voting and registering on a continuous decrease, this is a wrong message to send to America. It is clear from the very beginning, from the court action taken in this case, that this was a legitimate victory; and the only reason we may be here today is over a battle of several elections ago in a case in Indiana, nothing to do with the gentlewoman from California. Had the majority adhered to the law, we would have dismissed this motion in its first days.
