Carl Stokes grew up in the ghetto of Cleveland but never let his surroundings hold him back. In fact, he made it his life's devotion to make a difference in the lives of others and to help others aspire to the greatness lurking within them. In 1962, Carl Stokes became the first black Democrat to be elected to the Ohio House of Representatives, winning a seat in Cuyahoga County.
