Tonight I join my colleagues in honoring the life and legacy of a great man and an American patriot, Bill Young. I keep looking to my right and expect to see him with that great smile, but I am sure tonight he is sitting at the right hand…
I thank the gentleman. Mr. Speaker, let's be clear--everyone in this body wants to end this government shutdown. We are all aware of the significant impacts the shutdown is having around the country; and I am pleased that, today, both…
Today marks the second day of the government shutdown, a shutdown that I and my Republican colleagues absolutely oppose. The shutdown has been made necessary because our friends on the other side of the Capitol refused to negotiate or…
I'm the first to admit that the Department of Defense should not be immune to reasonably based reductions. We should be doing that. That's exactly what we've been doing the past few years and will continue to do this year. {time} 2130 This…
I join the gentleman in opposition to this amendment. I understand the gentleman's concerns about what's happened in Afghanistan, what is happening in Afghanistan. Many of us have been to Afghanistan many times. That country was totally…
The Afghan National Army Special Forces are the most capable component of the Afghan National Security Forces and have made significant strides toward becoming an independent and effective force in Afghanistan. The only path forward to…
Again, we're not talking about a helicopter manufacturer that would suffer. It's the combat unit in Afghanistan that would be devastated and unable to fulfill its mission, and if it's not able to fulfill its mission, then we will not have…
I demand a recorded vote. The Acting CHAIR. Pursuant to clause 6 of rule XVIII, further proceedings on the amendment offered by the gentlewoman from Connecticut will be postponed. Amendment No. 45 Offered by Ms. Lee of California The…
Again, I rise in opposition to this amendment. We have made significant cuts in our national defense and continue to do so. We are at lowest levels as a percentage of GDP expenditures for our national security in a long time. I would rise…
H.R.331 : Introduced by Rep. Ken Calvert (CA-42) - Amends veterans' educational assistance program reporting requirements.
It is hoped that such an interruption is viewed as being positive toward the students' reinstatement, rather than a down grade.
HR 331 would correct the problem by permitting each college in the District to certify veterans for all classes attended within the District rather than just for classes attended at that particular college.
This responsible piece of legislation will bring consistency across the different chapters of GI Bill benefits.
What is desperately needed is funding mechanisms--similar to Title V grants--that would assist colleges in developing and advancing student veteran learning communities.
Our country has a proud history of honoring our military heroes, and in doing so we place an emphasis on recognizing servicemembers whose actions placed them in harm's way for the benefit of our Nation and their fellow soldiers. It's…
Thank you, Mr. Ryan. This is what principled, visionary, responsible leadership looks like. I commend Chairman Ryan and the entire team for this budget and for insisting on regular order. I also congratulate this body for finally forcing…
I would hope that we could work towards streamlining the permit process for natural gas production on some of these public properties.
I proudly stand with my good friend and fellow Californian, Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy, in strong support of this legislation we have both championed, H.R. 667, which will redesignate NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center as the Neil A…

Next, I yield to Dan Lungren, one of our senior Members, a former attorney general from the State of California. I have to point out he is a great fan and alumnus of Notre Dame.
I thank the gentleman. We are going to go out of order for a minute, and I yield to our good friend from Illinois (Mr. Dold).
I thank the gentleman for his service. Next, I would like to recognize our dean, the dean of the California Republican delegation, Congressman Jerry Lewis.
I certainly thank the gentleman. Not only has he been a great colleague of all of us in California, but a great friend to every one of us. I'd say we'll miss you, but I know we will be seeing you around both in California and here in…
I thank you, Mr. Rohrabacher, and I look forward to serving with you for a long time in the future. God bless. Elton Gallegly was brought up, and I'd like to say something about Elton. Elton and I are close friends. We've spent a lot of…
