I have some authority to speak on this, having spent 10 years as a deputy district attorney in Los Angeles county and as a criminal trial court judge in Los Angeles county. Under the Clinton Justice Department, since President Clinton became president, some 700 people have been tried and convicted for perjury and perjury-related crimes. As we speak today, Mr. Speaker, some 115 people sit in Federal prisons as a result of their conviction on perjury charges. Those are people that were prosecuted and convicted by the Clinton Justice Department. In my own home State of California, since Bill Clinton became president, there have been some 16,000 prosecutions for perjury. So the suggestion that perjury charges would not be brought in an appropriate case is incorrect.
