History tells us that the states created the federal government.

That is how it should be. And I am sure the founding fathers would agree.

Instead of focusing on punishment, as we do with today's hearing, we should also look at strategies that prevent accidents in the first place.

One injury, one illness or one death on the job is one too many.

Simply increasing penalties and creating even more rules will not work.

Instead, Republicans believe that cooperation with employers to fix potential problems, along with strict enforcement, works best.

We Republicans do not defend and do not support bad employers who put their employees at risk, and I offer my sincere condolences to those families who lost a loved one this way.

If anything, this 'gotcha' approach will lead to more employer challenges and lawsuits.

But it seems President Obama wants to stop the music and send the band home.

If you limit charitable deductions, you limit support of the arts--and other worthy causes.

I think the federal government has been right to focus our resources on disadvantaged children and their families.

I think it would be a real mistake to simply layer on an additional program.

I believe that parents must remain in control of early childhood care and education.

Volunteering our time and our talents is a way that all Americans can give back.

Hearings like this one give us an opportunity to shine a spotlight on the organizations that are doing things all on their own to promote volunteerism and service.

Now is not the time to frighten people out of the market.

It would be a real mistake to dismantle it, or nationalize it, as has been suggested in this committee in the past.

What we have before us is a partisan product that is fundamentally flawed.
