“I think the Republicans are trying to do their very best job here. We heard a lot of screaming and yelling. I do not know if my colleagues remember exactly what happened, but when the Democrats were in charge, they were not exactly perfect. We had a lot of complaints, too. I think some of the complaints that we had were very legitimate. When I first came here, Jim Wright was the Speaker and Jim Wright had to leave and there were some problems there. We had a House bank scandal. We had a House post office scandal. We had all kinds of things going on. Republicans were screaming and yelling about it. Today I have to tell my colleagues, after all these years, and with all due respect to my colleagues, I think we are working better together right now than we were back in those days. I will have to admit I was frustrated in those days. I was very frustrated and I was probably screaming. In fact most of my colleagues can remember me screaming and yelling in those days. But I think that we are actually working better now than we did when I first became a Member of the House. There is always room for improvement and I hope we will.”
