today I would like to begin my talk here with a question of why do we think that America is a great country. I would like people who are listening and the people who are perhaps reading this in the Congressional Record to ask themselves why they think that America is such a great country. Is it because we have a powerful military? No, that could not be the answer, could it, because there are a lot of great countries? There are a lot of countries in the world that have strong militaries, powerful militaries. Yet, they are not great countries. They are not countries that we would wish to identify with. Is it because we have a lot of big companies, a lot of industrial companies in the United States? No. They have a lot of big firms and big companies in other parts of the world that are pretty despicable parts of the world. In fact, there are big companies at different places in the world that no American would want to live? Perhaps it is because we have a beautiful flag, and we have the red, white, and blue, that is sitting behind the podium there. A beautiful flag does not make a great country, nor does a big military or a powerful military make a great country. Certainly one of the factors that make a society a great country is the fact that people have a certain degree of freedom, and that was one of the guiding principles that led to the formation of the United States 200 years ago, when our Founding Fathers struggled for liberty and for independence.…
