Mr. Speaker, H.R. 2202, the Immigration in the National Interest Act, which this modified closed rule makes in order, is one of the most important pieces of legislation we shall consider this year. There is no question that U.S. immigration policy needs to be revised and improved to respond to our national interests and this bill is a sensible and measured response to that critical challenge. I, too, commend our colleagues from Texas, Mr. Smith, the chairman of the Immigration Subcommittee, and the ranking member of the subcommittee, Mr. Bryant, for their outstanding work in bringing this bipartisan bill to the floor. I would also like to point out the important work of my friend and fellow Californian, Mr. Gallegly, who chaired the Speaker's task force on immigration.
