I really appreciate that we are here today to talk about the Native priorities within the 2023 Farm Bill.

We also support Senator Murkowski's Improving ARCTIC Act and the host of provisions that address food security for Alaska Natives.

We hope the same bipartisan support and collaboration will extend throughout the Farm Bill reauthorization process.

It was a really offensive statement by probably somebody who was not very well informed.

This is not that scary; it can be done.

I would like to extend sincerest gratitude to Senator Schatz and Senator Murkowski for the opportunity to testify today.

But we know we need to do so much more here. Hunger and poverty in Indian Country are significant reasons why the Farm Bill matters.

Everything that we have put in place is just another step forward in progress.

We have a responsibility to support the sovereignty of tribal nations.

MAZON also supports Senator Murkowski's Improving ARCTIC Act and the host of provisions that address food security for Alaska Natives.

But we know we need to do so much more here. Hunger and poverty in Indian Country are significant reasons why the Farm Bill matters.

Tribal sovereignty must be respected in all federal legislation.

I do want to be clear, though, this legislation in no way absolves the Federal Government of its actions in one of the deadliest Indian massacres in our Nation's history.

It is time for Congress to step up, place this land in restricted fee status and effectuate this covenant.

I would like to commend both tribes for their leadership in restoring this land to tribal ownership and signing a covenant to forever protect the land as a sacred site and memorial to the victims and survivors of the Wounded Knee Massacre.
