I firmly believe that it's important to get people back to work again.

First of all it's to recognize the tremendous economic strength of this country and to set the putting back to work of our people as a top priority.

We must redouble our efforts to help these young men and women find jobs.

This bill would have been inflationary and would have penalized the workers who can least afford it by jeopardizing employment opportunities for low wage earners and the unemployed, especially nonstudent teenagers.

The employer who hires the handicapped is not only helping them; he is also helping himself and his country.

Everyone who wants to work should be able to work.

We have had an all-out program in which we have had splendid cooperation from the Government agencies, from private enterprise, and from the media in working on jobs for veterans.

A veteran has some special qualities that make him particularly qualified for a job.

And we can expect that the important and diligent service they are presently providing for the American people will also continue as they move into full time occupations.

As our trade expands, production and employment in the American economy will be stimulated and our balance of payments placed in better equilibrium.

Today only 30 million employees are covered by private retirement plans.

It will be a full employment budget.

In order to keep the administrative wage structure flexible, to fight inflation, and to maintain sufficient employment levels, I must disapprove this bill.

They must have a chance to become professionals: doctors, nurses, engineers, managers and teachers.

Do we really believe that every American is entitled to a decent education, decent housing, decent job at a decent wage?
