The progress which has been made in the recovery of Europe and in the strengthening of democratic institutions there makes it appropriate at this time to end the status of Germany as an enemy country.

In our country the Government exists to serve the people.

We share with you a common devotion to the democratic way of life.

Korea has become a testing ground in which the validity and practical value of the ideals and principles of democracy which the Republic is putting into practice are being matched against the practices of communism which have been imposed upon the people of north Korea.

He revived their belief in the strength and the ultimate triumph of the cause of freedom and democracy.

At the present time, when the world is still disturbed by fear and conflicting ideologies, it is gratifying to know that Brazil and the United States are exerting their constructive efforts in the common resolve to strengthen democracy and assure world peace under conditions in which freedom and human rights will flourish.

It was hard for some people to realize at the close of World War II that we could never again retire behind the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans and rely on friends abroad to protect democracy and freedom.

But a price control measure must fall far short of being a democratic instrument if it fails to surround the individual with safeguards against ill-considered or arbitrary action.

I hope it may continue through years of increasing usefulness to release that deep love of humanity, that eagerness to make life fuller and sturdier, that is the very core of democracy itself.
