I want to commend Senator Hatch for raising this issue of antimicrobial resistance and the need for innovation. The problem that the Senator is addressing here is a real threat to public health. The Director of the CDC reports that more than 63,000 patients in the United States die every year from hospital-acquired, antibiotic resistant infections. Although I strongly support this amendment as it is an excellent first step, a comprehensive response is needed. I hope we can continue to address the broader issue within the Committee this Congress. I also agree that we need to continue to work with FDA on this issue of accountability and look forward to working with the Chairman and other members of the Senate on this issue.
