Tammy Baldwin is an American politician serving as the junior United States senator from Wisconsin since January 3, 2013. A member of the Democratic Party, she made history as the first openly LGBTQ+ person elected to the U.S. Senate. Baldwin previously served in the U.S. House of Representatives from January 6, 1999, to January 3, 2013, representing Wisconsin's 2nd congressional district. Throughout her career, she has focused on issues such as healthcare, education, and economic opportunity for all Americans.
I also appreciate my colleague, Senator Murphy, for talking about some of the issues that we're not grappling with here today, stagnant wages, et cetera, as we look at the health of our middle class.
A report by the Joint Economic Committee released this week, chaired by our colleague on this committee, Senator Casey, states that for women over 65 years of age, Social Security accounts for two-thirds of their total income.
I'm deeply concerned about some of the statistics from my home State of Wisconsin, the number of citizens who rely solely on Social Security as a source of income once they retire.
Ensuring access to quality and affordable healthcare has been and will always continue to be a very high priority of mine.
One of the ways that we've already seen expansion of access to care... is the provision in the Affordable Care Act that allows young people to stay on their parents' health insurance until they're 26.
The Mental Health Parity Act and the Affordable Care Act both take important steps to make this vision a reality.
Around 200,000 Wisconsinites could gain Medicaid coverage through the Affordable Care Act Medicaid expansion should our Governor make that decision.
