I come from a cold weather State, or it used to be a cold weather State.

There are some who believe that global warming is not real; there are some who believe that global warming is not significantly caused by human activity; and there are some of us who very strongly disagree.

We believe that global warming is causing very significant problems to our planet today and is costing us huge amounts of money in terms of dealing with extreme weather disturbances.

I would assume that for the mission of the United States military of defending our country, it would be preferable to be producing these biofuels on farms in the United States of America rather than importing from Saudi Arabia or other…

Some will say that is all very well and good, but it is more expensive.

Do you think the Federal Government is going to be there another 60 years supporting these guys?

When we have a $15 trillion national debt, when our middle class is declining, when poverty is increasing... there is no end in sight [for taxpayer support for nuclear power].

The future of nuclear power will 100 percent be determined by whether or not the taxpayers of this country continue to provide huge, huge financial support to the nuclear power industry for the indefinite future.

The Federal Government has picked winners and losers. The big winner is the nuclear power industry.

When do we get it off of the Government welfare programs? When does it begin to stand on its own?

So why doesn't nuclear power go to Wall Street and the private sector and get that insurance?

I believe that every other State in the country has that right.

I think it was a disaster impacting their country.

The NRC's job is safety--safety.

I called for a moratorium on license renewals until we could examine what happened and implement reforms.

99.9 percent safe is not good enough.

I find it somewhat ironic that some of my friends on this committee express their distaste for loan guarantees and then tell us they want to build another 100 or 200 nuclear power plants in this country.

Would you agree with me that virtually the entire scientific community... recognizes, A, that global warming is real and, B, that it is significantly caused by human activity.

I would hope that some of my Republican friends would work with us on what we think is one of the major causes of the high price of gas right now; that is, speculation from Wall Street companies on the oil futures market.

My only point on all this is I hear sustainable energy being attacked, and yet you have an entire major industry that people want to greatly expand, for better or for worse, which is totally dependent on the support of the Federal…

I think sometimes if we hear discussion around here, the impression is that sustainable energy is just doing terrible.

I think it is totally irresponsible that we are not moving as aggressively as possible to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
