This is what drives the American people crazy. Eight hundred thousand workers today, including the FBI, including the TSA, including very decent people who are trying to support their families.

They have got to understand that the Senate is an independent part of the United States government. They don't work for President Trump. They work for the American people and their constituents.

But to say to the president, look, we're all part of the team. But you're not the dictator.

And I ask and I beg my Republican colleagues, stand up to Trump, do the right thing for this country.

And I think that while Trump told the American people he wanted this shutdown, I think he has got to understand that is not in the best interests of this country.

Well, I think the American people are going to have to stand up and tell Donald Trump that when he told us several weeks ago that he wanted to shut down the government, that he was wrong.

You cannot have a president who makes important decisions and overrides what the United States Congress has worked hard to do because he saw something on a TV program.

We should not be wasting $5 billion on a wall when there are much more cost-effective ways to do border security.

I think that the wall is an absurd idea. I think it's a waste of money. I think it just fans Trump's illusions and no, I'm not going to support $5 billion or money for a wall.

Well, you just had it right on your program a few moments ago, where the president said, I take responsibility for the shutdown.

I opposed the MISSION Act.

We are in the process of dismembering the VA, taking resources away from the VA, putting it into the private sector.

The function of the VA is to provide the highest quality care to all veterans in a cost-effective way.

I just want to clarify with Senator Cornyn so there is no confusion: His amendment deals strictly with Israel and not regional allies; am I correct on that?

Bernie Sanders who is here to give his take on that new thunderdome we witnessed in the Oval Office today. And he is making a move to change the relationship with Saudi Arabia.

The resolution that I authored along with Senator Mike Lee and Senator Chris Murphy... basically says that the United States has got to end its participation in this horrible, destructive war led by Saudi Arabia.

Well, I think the President, sadly enough, has a great fondness for authoritarian-type leaders around the world, whether it's Putin in Russia or Mohammed bin Salman in Saudi Arabia, or other authoritarian leaders.

We have got to rethink our relationship to the Saudi government in general.

It is the Congress, not the president, not a Republican president or a Democratic president, who has war-making responsibility.

I think the murder of Khashoggi has given the Congress and the entire world a glimpse into the despotic and brutal regime that now has power in Saudi Arabia.

What MBS did and what the Saudis did to Jamal Khashoggi is unspeakable and an absolute disgrace.

I think what the Democrats have got to be is bold, speak to the needs of where the American people are on economic issues.

I believe that Trump really does not politically believe in anything.

I hope very much that Trump does not believe that by firing Sessions today that he's going to interfere with that investigation because if he does, that's a very serious offense.

Democrats in the House have a constitutional responsibility for oversight.
