If the McChrystal report is right, I think it is, we have to have a government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan that is credible and effective.

Mr. Emanuel did not say, until the election. He said, until we assess whether there is a credible partner.

Can Hamid -- Hamid Karzai, who is both corrupt and inept, emerge as somebody changed? Can he adapt? I would say I'm a strong doubter of that.

This was putting pressure on the government. And I would note that, within 24 hours of Mr. Emanuel's comments, Karzai folded. So, it looks like American pressure is having some effect.

The mandate is an idea that has been championed by Republicans, especially, for example, Charles Grassley.

The American people gave them a chance. The American people gave them the House, gave them the Senate, gave them the White House. I have to say, America, I warned you.

But frankly, one is all the Democrats need. We've had this tectonic shift in the Republican Party.

There are really remarkable abuses in the present system. They have been going on a long time. And I think that's why this reform is going to be, actually, it's going to be very effective.

I think it actually -- as a political matter, frankly, I think it kind of complicates his work here at home, makes it a little harder, because expectations will be all that much higher.

I think it does. And frankly, it's kind of cheap shot, they owe it to 'American Idol'... He has used deadly force and is stepping it up in the tribal regions in Pakistan and of course in Afghanistan.
