I have been persistent in my efforts to protect the rights of disenfranchised communities in my district of inner-city Houston and across the Nation.

As a patriotic American, as you are, Mr. Miles, as you are, Mr. Lee--Sheriff Lee--as you are, Mayor, I say to you this kind of behavior is totally unacceptable.

It seems to me that in targeting we ought to at least, before we perfect a raid of this type, talk to the local sheriff.

This is not the way we treat people in the United States of America.

You knew before you came that laws were being broken but you picked on the undocumented persons to the exclusion of the employers.

We are a better country, Mr. Miles. We are a better country.

Taking babies from mothers is not the deterrent that this country wants to be known for.

Babies ought not be separated from their parents, Mr. Miles. Babies ought not be separated.

Is it true that you separated mothers who were breastfeeding?

In my world that parent is separated from the child.

The evidence show that you separated children from their parents? It does.

You planned to separate the children from their parents?

It is difficult to imagine how a President can see children separated from their parents--babies--and still say that this is a deterrent.

Let us not make the mistake of assuming that what ICE imposes is not the will of the President.

If these were babies coming from the north, we would not have treated them the way we treated these children.

But you are using inflammatory language.

Nowhere in the law do we have language such as what you just used. That was done to inflame.

I know enough about it to suggest that it appears to me that we are not being even-handed in terms of our approach.

We cannot silo ourselves and deal with these problems in an effective way. We have to deal with them in concert with each other.

I think that as an ally of the LGBTQ+ community, but not a member of it, I have a duty to do all that I can to prevent the discrimination.

This information has to be received and transmitted across the length and breadth of the country so that people will understand that what we are dealing with is real.

It is time for us to move to the next level in this fight, and the next level includes criminal penalties for stealing, for the theft, of my opportunity to have a loan.

It is my belief that we need criminal penalties. People who steal money from you at the bank can suffer from criminal penalties, penalties associated with fines and time in jail.

People who discriminate have to be called out. They have to be dealt with.

You are not alone. You have allies in the Congress of the United States of America.
