I believe it is one of the most important issues that we will cover in this session of the 105th Congress. Having spent a number of years at the State level as a legislator and the last 8 as superintendent of schools for the State of North Carolina, I know a lot about what we should do and a number of the things we should not do. I happen to believe that everyone should have that opportunity, and today we see that college is becoming more and more difficult for more and more people as the cost of higher education continues to rise and the opportunity tends to be farther and farther away for those young people who have the greatest needs. I guess I might say that one of the reasons I got into politics and really into education... was an opportunity to help people and really to help young people.
