“The international legal definition of the crime of genocide is found in article II of the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide. Few were able to take anything of value as militants seized their money and jewelry. Some--just a few because they were not healthy enough to flee--submitted to the demands that they convert to Islam to avoid being killed.
