“Today marks the 90th birthday of former President Ronald Reagan, a decent and honorable man, who had the unique ability to see what was best about America and appeal to "the better angels of our nature." He came into office when America was suffering from a crisis of confidence, and he gave us back our voice. By invoking images of a "shining city upon a hill" he reminded Americans not only of our national heritage, but of how the oppressed and downtrodden of the world looked to this nation for leadership. In my recent trip to Africa I was again reminded of how incredibly blessed America is. It is my firm belief that to whom much is given much is required. Those who are oppressed and downtrodden today still view this nation as Ronald Reagan described it a decade ago--a "shining city upon a hill"--a beacon of hope and democracy. And so, in the spirit of President Reagan's birthday I ask that you take a moment to reflect on how we can continue to embrace this calling.”
