Madam Speaker, I want to thank Mr. Sarbanes for his leadership on this issue. Most of the issues have been covered, but I would just say that there is nothing magic about strapping yourself into a metal box and driving 25 or 30 miles when you can telework. I think the important part of this legislation is the fact that Mr. Sarbanes will have someone in each agency, a senior person responsible. Some agencies do a great job, and others do not do very well. But also, it is important for the American people to know the productivity, the studies have shown that the productivity of people who are teleworking is very, very high. So you are really getting a lot for the government and for whoever is the employer. Secondly, with regard to the environment and the traffic and the congestion in this region and other regions, it is very important. Lastly, with the American family under such attack, the opportunity for moms and dads to spend more time with their families, singing in a church choir, or coaching Little League is very beneficial. I rise in strong support of H.R. 1722, the Telework Improvements Act, and thank the gentleman for yielding me time. I also want to thank Congressman John Sarbanes for introducing this important and necessary legislation, and the committee for moving this legislation to the floor. I am an original cosponsor and strong proponent of this bill. I have been a long-time and staunch supporter of telework, also referred to as telecommuting.…
