“April 14th is the day on which we remember the victims of the gruesome events of the Armenian Genocide. From 1915 to 1923 during the times of the Ottoman Empire, the Turkish government implemented a ruthless extermination of innocent Armenians through which an astonishing and sickening 1.5 million Armenians were killed and over 500,000 additional individuals were exiled from the lands in which they had lived for hundreds and of years. It is imperative that we properly recognize this massacre as a genocide--a concerted effort to annihilate a people. We must show respect and remembrance to the victims of this terrible period in history. By doing so, we are honoring those victims and condemning the government-sanctioned crime of mass murder and doing our part to prevent similarly horrific events from occurring again. The archives of history must be honest and accurate and tell the real story of the Armenian Genocide. On a personal level, I have joined the Armenian congressional caucus to assist in the effort to promote international awareness of Armenia's history.”
