I think in a broad sense we are at a point now where we are getting close to the point at which we will vote on the bill itself--the recovery bill--the Recovery and Reinvestment Act. We have heard a lot of debate and discussion about parts of this bill that people don't like--and there is no reason why we shouldn't debate those points of contention--but I think we should also step back and look at what is going to work from this bill and why this bill is so essential to our economy. The bad news is that this bill is not being debated and these amendments are not being voted on in a vacuum. The reason why we are debating this bill is because we have about the worst economy that we have seen since the 1930s, at least the worst economy in more than a generation. That is without question.
