Just in response to your comments, Mr. Chairman, I do want to point out that the president of Canadian Natural Resources Limited recently said long term we do need Keystone to be able to grow the volumes in Canada.

The discussion we are having today is important because the Keystone pipeline project highlights an issue that this Committee has been debating for a long time: climate change caused by human activity.

I would never claim to speak for all the Democrats about the Keystone project specifically, we do all agree that our country must set ambitious goals to combat anthropogenic climate change.

And also, do you consider the potential future to support economic growth in a particular community?

It is my hope that the multiagency research plan will address these very important questions in order to insure the continued prosperity of the industry while preserving the health and safety of the general public.

Hydraulic fracturing has led to a significant expansion of drilling for oil and gas in the United States.

I am pleased that the Administration is calling upon the expertise of our Federal agencies to ensure that we have the best scientific information available.

Although I am a strong proponent of reducing our country's dependence on conventional gas and oil, I hope we make similar commitments to developing clean energy technology, with a similar focus on preserving human and environmental health.
