On the recordOctober 19, 2005
This is almost hysterical, in a bad sense hysterical. We were in the Committee on Education and the Workforce today marking up the TANF bill. We offered an amendment to raise the minimum wage to a living wage. Shot down. We offered an amendment that we wanted to give more money for people who were going from welfare to work, we were going to step in and provide them with child care, more money for child care. We have a study that says you need about $8 billion for these people to have adequate child care so they will actually get off the welfare rolls and get to work. That got shot down.
