over the past 5 months I have had the opportunity to have my first service on the Committee on Ways and Means, and I must say it has been very, very interesting and a wonderful experience. Right now, in the State of Ohio where my colleague who sits on Ways and Means with me, we have 57,000 jobs that were lost in the City of Cleveland, 167,000 jobs that were lost in the State of Ohio, since this President took office. What I would have wanted to see is the people of the State of Ohio who have been laid off and blocked out having to have the opportunity to get unemployment benefits. What I wanted to see is when we are in a terrible situation, a recession, that my State would have received some money to help the people who need a prescription drug benefit, the kids who need child care and day care. What I did not see in this tax cut proposal presented by the chairman of the committee is any help for them. I understand business and business wants support, but all the business people in my community said do not give me a tax cut, help the poor.
