“the gentlewoman from Wisconsin has fought as hard as anybody in this body for universal health care for people who play by the rules, pay their taxes, most of whom have jobs and simply have been left out of this system, left out because this Congress, this President, do not seem to care. We had 40 million people uninsured 3 years ago; today that number is 44 million. Of those people who do have insurance, many of them are underinsured. Many do not have a decent drug benefit. Many seniors do not have a good drug benefit, and this Congress has either done nothing or moved backwards as they have tried to privatize Medicare and tried medical savings accounts and other kinds of Rube Goldberg ways to try to provide health insurance, when in fact most of what they are trying to do is enrich the drug companies and the insurance companies. My State of Ohio has 1.2 million people without health insurance, and 85 percent of those who lose their jobs also lose their health insurance.”
