I ask my colleagues to speak to a physician or to a nurse or to a hospital administrator or to a medical researcher about this problem of antibiotic resistance. Every one of them will tell you that they know of cases, they have seen cases, they have seen the damage done by cases where antibiotic resistance is very real. Antibiotics are not as effective as they were a year ago or 5 years ago or 10 years ago. They also will tell you that we need action, we need to begin to recognize the problem, we need to anticipate the problem of growing resistance to antibiotics, and we need to do something about the problem. This amendment does not ban any antibiotics. It simply carries out the action plan that our government has suggested. I ask for support for the Brown-Slaughter amendment.
