I am recommending that this body pass the Interior appropriations bill for fiscal year 2002. I come from an agricultural background. I was raised on a small farm in northwest Missouri. My dad always had a little saying: When you look like a mule, you've got to work like one. So I guess I have hired on for the duration. We will get this bill completed. I was lucky enough to hold the chairmanship of this Interior Subcommittee earlier this year, and I made it a priority to move this bill forward in a noncontroversial and bipartisan way. The bill up for consideration is a delicate balance of meeting our Nation's needs while remaining fiscally responsible. Not everyone will be happy with every portion of this bill--it has never happened with this particular piece of legislation since I have been in the Senate for the last 12 years--but I can guarantee you, the bill is extremely fair.
