I rise today to express my very strong support for H.R. 4296--a bill that will ban the manufacture and possession of 19 semi-automatic assault weapons. I commend my colleagues on the House Judiciary Committee for bringing this bill to the floor, and I also wish to commend the President and his Cabinet for the excellent support they provided in helping us to gain passage of this legislation. Mr. Speaker, this is one of the most significant votes of the year, and I am proud to cast my vote in favor of the assault weapon ban. We have shown a willingness to be tough on criminals. Now we have to be willing to show that we can take the weapons out of the hands of these criminals. Countless police officers in my district have called me--have come by my office--have stopped me on the street to express their support for H.R. 4296. I am glad that today I have the opportunity to stand up on this floor and say that I support banning these weapons of war.
