Starting the season ranked an unlucky 13th, the Buckeyes kept winning and winning, ending up the regular season by beating archrival Michigan 14-9, remaining undefeated and ranked 2nd in the country. Their record earned Ohio State a trip to Tempe, Arizona to play in the Bowl Championship Series national championship game against the Miami Hurricanes, a game in which the Buckeyes entered as an 11 point underdog. In that national championship game, ultimately decided in double overtime Ohio State emerged victorious with their offense scoring 31 points and their defense holding Miami for four downs on the two yard line as time expired to win the game.
