Zohran Mamdani is a member of the New York State Assembly, representing the 36th district. Elected as a Democrat, he is known for his progressive policies and advocacy for social justice. Mamdani has focused on issues such as housing equity, healthcare access, and environmental justice during his time in office. He has been an outspoken advocate for the rights of marginalized communities in New York.
Yet what shocked us was not simply that act, but was the fact that we knew that act is taking place every day across this country, oftentimes unseen, unnoticed and unabashed in its cruelty.
One of the key responsibilities in leadership is telling New Yorkers what you deem to be acceptable in the conduct as it pertains to federal government and politics across this country.
And amidst this horror, we have seen the current mayor abdicate that responsibility entirely. This is a position that has been described as having the second-largest bully pulpit in the country.
The proposal we put forward would raise $9 billion and we would also raise an additional $1 billion from savings and reforms that can be done at the city level.
It is not the government’s job to bully talk show hosts off of the air. It is not the government’s job to tell us what we can and cannot talk about.
We cannot be free if we are subservient to those who abuse power for their own ends.
We cannot understand this moment of authoritarianism as solely coming from the White House when it is also a moment that is characterized by the cowardice of those in response to it.
It's not the government's job to bully talk show hosts off of the air. It is not the government's decision to tell us what we can and cannot talk about.
Last week, Disney/ABC caved to Trump administration pressure. Millions of Americans helped them find their backbone.
Whether you watch Jimmy Kimmel or not, today’s decision is a victory for free speech.
