I hope my colleagues will join me in this good-faith effort to make FATCA more effective in its intention and yet less burdensome on law-abiding Americans living and working abroad.
Carolyn Maloney
The Public Record
Carolyn Maloney is a member of the United States House of Representatives, representing New York's 12th congressional district since 1993. A member of the Democratic Party, she has held various leadership roles within Congress and is known for her advocacy on issues such as women's rights, economic equality, and gun control. Throughout her tenure, Maloney has been involved in significant legislative efforts, including those aimed at supporting the garment industry in New York City.
I think it is important that we remember why we passed Dodd-Frank in the first place. We did it because our country experienced the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression: 8 million people lost their jobs; 6 million people lost…
But, to me, it's not a monetary thing. It really is human life because terrorism financing has become a way of life in this world.
I personally do not think FATCA should be abolished. But certainly the reporting procedures should not subject ordinary Americans, in my opinion, to the same scrutiny as criminal tax evaders, money launderers.
I strongly support the Volcker Rule, and I believe it stands for an important principle, that banks should not gamble with their customers' money, especially when that money is backed by a taxpayer guarantee.
My takeaway from the two charts of risk levels on the banks' trading desks is that the Volcker Rule has not caused banks to pull back from market making even during periods of market stress.
If we want to talk about getting capital out for entrepreneurs and businesses, it is figuring out why in the world would Basel III discourage business loans?
the number one protection in our Constitution is the right to protest, freedom of speech, and then freedom of the press.
Because the FBI does not assess the accuracy of its partners' technology, it risks relying on technologies that could potentially have higher error rates or could be obsolete.
I am incredibly interested in Basel III and I will ask the chairman if he would have a hearing on it.
The public had limited understanding of the nature of the system and how their personal information, including face images, is being used and protected.
The FBI was obligated to provide transparency in how it was planning to use and eventually did start using the facial images of the members of the American public.
It's really, personally, I think it's a scandal. It's an incredible scandal.
if Congress is serious about helping agencies improve their cybersecurity, it must call on the President to rescind...his across-the-board hiring freeze.
I'd like to really suggest to my colleagues that we might look at some type of two-tiered approach in the hiring freeze; that, if it's an agency that is making the government more efficient saving taxpayers' dollars, as IGs do, then it…
So I'm just wondering how that is going to impact your ability to do your job, particularly when reports show that your job actually saves taxpayers money.
the financial crisis revealed huge problems with many short-term financing markets, some of which completely broke down during the crisis.
the point of many postcrisis regulations has been to reduce the banks' reliance on unstable short-term financing.
