“I agree. The amazing thing about it is that we continue to hear statements during this presidential campaign from Mr. Dole saying how he is going to be the education President, or that he is going to prioritize education. Yet we know from his own record that he has consistently voted against expanding education programs and that the President, President Clinton, in the last 4 years has probably done more to expand educational opportunities, particularly at the higher education level, college and for graduate programs, than anybody else. I just saw it myself, but twice he came to my district in the last 3 years or so and talked about, he was at Rutgers University on both occasions, and talked about the National Direct Student Loan Program, the AmeriCorps Program. I have actually witnessed students that are involved in these programs, and they are just very helpful. They are not only helpful in terms of helping the students, but they also help the community.”
