I believe the arms embargo against the Bosnian Moslem's should be lifted. Thousands of innocent Bosnian Moslems have been slaughtered before our eyes as the world has debated the proper way to provide them with the means to defend themselves. The international community has left the Bosnian Moslems defenseless, forced them to fight their Serbian aggressors with both hands tied behind their backs, contributed to their slaughter. I am a cosponsor of the Dole-Lieberman amendment because I believe the arms embargo should be lifted. I will vote for that amendment. However, I also intend to vote for the Mitchell amendment. I prefer international consensus through the United Nations. The President has asked for more time to seek the agreement of our allies. I want to empower the President in his efforts to prevail up on the allies to lift the arms embargo. But I am not willing to give him forever. Lifting the arms embargo to ensure that the Bosnian Moslems will be able to defend themselves is the right thing to do. The United States should lift it, and so should the international community.
