I am absolutely convinced of the merits of S. 1955, and I am committed to moving ahead with the idea of establishing a formal entity at NIH to coordinate the current research effort and give greater priority within the overall NIH budget for research on back pain, cancer-related pain and the other focus areas addressed in S. 1955. I also thank Senator Kassebaum for working with us to take an important step toward reaching our goal of increased emphasis on pain research. Finally, it is my sincere hope and intention that during the 105th Congress we will work again in a bipartisan manner toward establishing a more permanent entity at NIH for pain research.
