  1. It's a pleasure to be able to join you and my colleagues and others who are gathered here to talk about something that has been on our minds for some considerable time now--many months, even 1\1/2\ to 2 years--and that is the subject of the economy and jobs and what's really going on in America. I'm a person who is of that baby boomer-type cycle--I'm 62--and there are many other people such as myself in America that have done a lot of work and tried to save our money and all of a sudden something seemed to go wrong in the economy. We lost a lot of money in 2008, and there is a real concern out there about jobs, the economy, and what's going on in the policies.2 sources2010govinfo.gov
  2. It's a treat to be able to join my colleagues this evening as we take a look at, once again, some of the fundamental questions that we face as a Nation: the questions that center around our budget deficits, the world economy--particularly unemployment in America--and the various policies that are involved in some of these questions. These are things that have absorbed the attention of our Nation now for some period of time because the economy has been very tough. There are many Americans that are hard workers that are out of work, and the condition of our country overall, even particularly various States, is troubling at best, and dire probably would be more accurate. I think that it's appropriate sometimes just to look back a few years to see where we have come from and also to develop a little wisdom from the past and the lessons that we can learn from the past.2 sources2010govinfo.gov
  3. I thought it would be appropriate to talk about what these bars mean. It's pretty straightforward. These were Republican years under Bush, and this shows the deficit. We're not proud of this deficit. Shouldn't be any. The worst year under Bush was this one where Speaker Pelosi ran the Congress. So this was Bush's worst year for deficit right here. So we go from 2009 to 2010 with President Obama, and he's three times the Bush level of deficit and this year is even higher. Now, one of the ways to measure these things is this deficit is a percent of our gross domestic product, all of the stuff that we make in America. This is running at about 3.1 percent. This is about 9.9 percent right here. Now, these numbers have consequences, and the consequences are your children and your grandchildren. But it also could precipitate a crisis a lot sooner, and we really don't know what that crisis looks like. What happens when you go to the bank and your ATM doesn't work? You worked all of your life and you have savings in the bank and there isn't any money in there because you can't get any money out because the dollar bill isn't worth anything. Have we ever experienced that before? We've seen some high inflation that's not pretty. What happens if the banking system just stops working because we pushed this too far?2 sources2010govinfo.gov
