In view of the foregoing considerations, I am withholding my approval of H.R. 6217.

Right now the battle in Korea is the frontline in the struggle between freedom and tyranny.

We want peace and we shall achieve it.

To do this will require hard work and sacrifice by all of us.

The determination of the South Koreans to maintain their independence is shown not only by the valor of their soldiers in the battleline, but also by countless supporting activities of the whole population.

I am constantly appreciative of the mutual and traditional friendship of our two countries and of the cooperative attitude of the people and Government of Chile toward the United States.

We believe in freedom for all the nations of the Far East.

If the history of the 1930's teaches us anything, it is that appeasement of dictators is the sure road to world war.

Cooperate fully with the Governors' Conference in support of its recent report and resolution on highway transportation.

Immediate and continuing action is required to conserve manpower, equipment, and materials in every field of production and to develop maximum efficiency in the use of all highway transportation facilities.

Highway transportation is of the utmost importance to the national defense.

In view of vastly increased traffic volume, the need for further application of the Action Program is evident.

The Action Program developed by the President's Highway Safety Conference has proved most successful in the reduction of traffic accidents.

We must make ourselves heard round the world in a great campaign of truth.

We must make ourselves known as we really are--not as communist propaganda pictures us.

Because of the pressing need to increase our efforts along this line, I have directed the Secretary of State to plan a strengthened and more effective national effort to use the great power of truth in working for peace.

Truth must prevail throughout the world, if we are to have just and lasting peace.

We must pool our efforts with those of the other free peoples in a sustained, intensified program to promote the cause of freedom against the propaganda of slavery.

Their reports were most satisfactory and highly gratifying to me.
