George Brown is one of my favorites. Avuncular comes to mind, a kindly, gentle smile, thoughtful, quizzical look on his face at times; withholding words until just the right ones came forward to fit the situation, whether he was speaking on the floor or in our Democratic Caucus; and principled also comes to mind to characterize George Brown.
