Last November, the Centers for Disease Control reported 34,000 Americans die every year from firearm injuries. If there is good news to be found in that terrible statistic, it is that the number has declined every year for the last 4 years. It is fewer than the 43,000 Americans who die every year from motor vehicle accidents. And yet when we have some of our colleagues on the floor pounding their podiums and saying how terrible it is--and it is terrible--they forget to put it in relation to other kinds of accidents and/or intentional acts that produce deaths among the American citizenry. That figure of 34,000 is far less than the 44,000 to 98,000 patients who die every year by medical error.
