I was home schooled at a time when most people did not know what home schooling was. It was not by choice, but rather because of childhood asthma which prevented me from going to school. And so as an alternative, I simply did all of my schoolwork at home. My parents helped in whatever way possible, but as I say, it was not an organized program. It was a standard school curriculum which I did at home. I did not think this was too remarkable. During the late Depression years, it was not uncommon for people to suffer considerable hardship and I just assumed this was my lot in life. What I discovered when I went to the State Senate was that unbeknownst to me, I had become a hero to the home school movement, because not only was I home schooled, but I had obtained a Ph.D. in nuclear physics and had been elected to the State Senate.
