One aspect of the bill that is especially important to me are the provisions for math and science education. In the Subcommittee on Research that I chair, we held several hearings on how to improve math and science education, where we have not been doing very well, especially considering the challenges ahead of us and the high-tech world that young people will be entering into. Today's information-driven economy and high-tech industry require workers, not just the specialists, not just the scientists, but the workers to have more math and science and technology skills than ever before. Understanding basic math and science is essential for individual prosperity and our Nation's continued economic growth. In this bill, we call on our world-class universities to play a greater role in improving the K-12 education, especially in math and science. And through research, through partnerships with local schools to develop better and more rigorous math and science curricula, and fellowships for elementary and secondary teachers, we can improve our math and science education in this country. I hope this legislation helps to ensure that every child develops the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the 21st century.
