I voted for cloture on the product liability bill because I believe it is important to the economy, job creation, international investment, and our ability to do research, especially on issues of women's health. Mr. President, much has been said about caps. I do not like caps-- caps on job creation or caps on innovative research. I do not like caps on technological advancement or caps on our ability to go global. I am opposed to caps on profits, caps on wages, or caps on opportunity. My job as a U.S. Senator is to save jobs, save lives and save communities. I support efforts to reduce frivolous law suits and improve the efficiency of our legal system. I have heard of cost estimates for cases that are in the millions. That's outrageous. We should make every effort to establish consistency and uniformity, but not at the price of people's fundamental right to redress. When it comes to public health and safety I want to ensure that those responsible are in fact held accountable for their actions. For that reason, I will not support any legislation which closes the courthouse door to citizens with legitimate cases. This is the kind of balance I support and that I believe we, as Members of Congress, need to achieve with this legislation.
