I have real concerns with the Administration's entire Fiscal Year 2018 budget request.
Cutting Interior's budget by well over $1 billion, approximately 10 percent, while not as bad as some other departments, nevertheless, it will significantly and certainly hamper the Department's ability to meet these many responsibilities.
We, on this Committee, have worked across the aisle to make sure the Park Service was taking these reports seriously.
The budget request for Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps programs in our jurisdiction reflects a more stable funding path for major aviation programs.
The fiscal year 2018 President's budget prioritizes defense spending at the expense of other national priorities, like education, infrastructure, and economic development.
Increasing defense spending at the expense of these other critical programs will not only make us less safe, but will undermine important investments key to our national competitiveness and our long-term security.
Not only do national monuments protect our Nation's most treasured public lands, but they also directly benefit rural economies.
Well, I thank you all for being here. This is certainly an issue that this committee has spent a good time looking at, and you are providing additional insight that is much needed.
As we discuss the importance of the Antiquities Act, it is rooted in the fact that our Nation has made a commitment that our most significant historical, cultural, and natural sites should be preserved in perpetuity.
