I wish to congratulate the chairman of the Banking Committee for the outstanding work he has done in crafting an interstate banking and branching bill which I believe is in the best economic interests of this country. I believe the committee bill will significantly improve the efficiency of financial institutions across this country to the long-term benefit of individuals and businesses. It will strengthen our economy. On the one hand, we need to eliminate unnecessary Federal barriers and allow interstate banking and branching to proceed as market forces dictate. On the other hand, we need to do this in a manner which does not threaten the safety and soundness of our banking system, and which respects both States' rights and the legitimate franchise interests of community banking institutions. In my view, the committee bill accomplishes these objectives.
