Barack Obama served as the 44th President of the United States from January 20, 2009, to January 20, 2017. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously represented Illinois in the U.S. Senate from 2005 to 2008 and served in the Illinois State Senate from 1997 to 2004. Obama is known for his signature policies including the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, and his efforts in economic recovery following the 2008 financial crisis. His presidency was marked by significant legislative achievements and a focus on healthcare reform, climate change, and foreign policy initiatives such as the Iran nuclear deal.
This sad episode reminds us that the United States must stand as a principled voice around the world on behalf of justice for heroes like Haleh Esfandiari who are detained without cause.
The conventional thinking in Washington tells us that we're a country divided into Red States and Blue States; that we're doomed to fight the same tired partisan battles over and over again.
There are those who tout their experience working the system in Washington. But the problem is that the system in Washington isn't working for us, and it hasn't been for a very long time.

I join Haleh Esfandiari's family and friends in welcoming her departure from Iran after months of harassment and over 100 days of detention.
It is outrageous that what began as a journey to visit and care for her 93 year old mother became such a terrible ordeal.
I look forward to continuing the dialogue with voters and building the kind of grassroots movement in Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire and South Carolina and the rest of the country that will send a clear signal to Washington that the American…
