Barack Obama served as the 44th President of the United States from January 20, 2009, to January 20, 2017. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously represented Illinois in the U.S. Senate from 2005 to 2008 and served in the Illinois State Senate from 1997 to 2004. I stand here today as hopeful as ever that the United States of America will endure.
We are here today not simply to pay tribute to those patriots who founded our nation in Philadelphia or defended it in Baltimore, but to take up the cause for which they gave so much.
We recognize that such enormous challenges will not be solved quickly.
It is fitting that we did so - because it was there that our American journey began.
I urge the Senate to confirm Eric Holder as the next attorney general of the United States.
His experience and the strength of his commitment to fairness assure me that the odious practices identified in this week's report by the inspector general will never be tolerated on his watch.
