Tom Harkin is a former U.S. Senator from Iowa who served from 1985 to 2015. A member of the Democratic Party, Harkin was known for his advocacy on disability rights and health care reform. He played a significant role in the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act and was a strong proponent of mental health services and education initiatives. Throughout his tenure, Harkin focused on issues affecting working families and rural communities in Iowa.
I would also say it is not sufficient to assert, as many swap dealers do, that the market for credit default swaps function properly and has experienced no major problems during the current crisis.
It is not credible to assert that the markets and present regulatory system have worked.
We must restore proper regulatory oversight if we are going to get this economy built on a solid foundation.
The last thing we should be doing is contributing a whole host of new, unappealing consequences in an already volatile marketplace.
