as the Chairman knows, the threat of chemical and biological warfare agent incidents due to accidents or acts of terrorism is real. I applaud the attention and support provided by the Committee in S. 1122 to research activities on detection and response technologies to these threats. It has come to my attention that interferometric sensors are one of the most promising technologies for creating relatively inexpensive, small, adaptable, highly sensitive chemical detectors. Such sensors are ideally suited for deployment in domestic emergency warning networks when integrated with technologies such as geographic information systems. Is it the committee's intention that all promising detection technologies, including interferometric sensors, be part of the Department's chemical and biological defense research program?
