as a member of the Banking Committee, I feel compelled to express my concern about the decision to cancel the semiannual RTC oversight hearing, which was mandated by law to have been held by December 3. Mr. Speaker, this is the people's house and the arrogance of power must not undermine the confidence that the American people hold in this institution. We are not members of some regulatory agency. We are Representatives in the U.S. Congress, and this body has a constitutional oversight obligation on this matter. Across the country, in polls and everyday conversations, there is concern about what is going on in Washington and why the special counsel is issuing subpoenas to top White House officials. It is in the President's best interests that we disclose all the facts related to this matter so that Americans can return our focus to issues of importance to our Nation. There have been numerous congressional hearings into Presidential activities in the past: 25 in the past 12 years--many for more frivolous matters than this affair. Let us hold hearings, find the truth, and get this matter behind us so we can return to the work the American people sent us here to do.
